What is the village like?

Sorzano is at the base of a gentle mountain, surrounded by vineyards and forests in a hilly area. It is a small village (200 inhabitants) where traditions are kept alive: locals cultivate their orchards, gather at sunset for their daily “tertulia” (chat) in public squares, walk to the communal sourse spring (the water is said to have benefitial effects on your health), dress up on Sundays for the weekly Mass –and catch up on gossips at the church gate straight after....

Sorzano invites you to take part in real “slow life” with the locals.

Patchwork is the local handicraft “par excellence”. Lola Barasoain, Europe’s top specialist in patchwork, retired to Sorzano, where she is gathering and studying an impressive collection of local samples and teaching the secrets of her skillful technique.

View Article  Vitoria's Cathedral

Ken Follet has finally written the second part of his book "Pilars of Earth". The new book takes place at the magnificent Cathedral of Vitoria in the Basque region of Spain.

The beautiful Gothic Cathedral of Vitoria is under renovation works. Made for Spain organizes tours for visiting the works. During the tour you will be direct witness of the reconstruction of a 13th century cathedral seeing "on site" how restorers, archaeologists, stone masons and architects work to return a monument to its former glory.

You may well have seen many Gothic cathedrals in your time, but never like this. While visiting you will learn how a 13th century building is restored. Your guide will explain architectural problems and their solutions, and will tell you about the city's history through archaeological discoveries that have been made in the cathedral. From a raised platform you can see the huge arches, columns and the unique decoration from up close. You will enjoy the views from the 16 meter-high scaffolding in place on the portico.

This renovation works have been declared "the best restoration project for an historic building currently under way in Europe" This is how cultural institutions, prestigious architects and international archaeologists refer to the restoration plan for Santa María Cathedral. The restoration works on this monument have also received the Europa Nostra Prize, awarded by the European Union for conservation and improvements to cultural heritage.

View Article  The Art of Tapas:

1.- The ideal number of people for tapas hopping is 4. For going tapas is best to go in small groups. Any group from 3 to 6 works well. More than 6 will not work at all.

2.- Tapas are enjoyed standing by the bar.

3.- After the second tapa in one place the group needs to move to the next tapas place.

4.- The way to pay the tapas is "invitando". This means that one pays in one place and the other pays in the next and so on. You should never split costs and each person needs to pay at least in one place.

5.- You need to match the tapa with beer or wine. The drink should change depending upon the tapa enjoyed at that very place.

6.- Never argue while having tapas. This is a way to have lunch or dinner while having fun guaranteed. You should avoid conversations that could end up in a discussion.

We visited the new ME Hotel today and we loved it.

The Reina Victoria was one of the most emblematic hotels in Madrid. It has been closed during 2 years and has gone through a great renovation process being re-born as ME Madrid in Fall 2006. This is a unique hotel. Very, very hip, fantastic views, outstanding location at Madrid's old quarter, great service, very good music and incredible technology everywhere...... Here comes some history of the hotel together with some pictures:

Since it opened in 1925, the art-deco hotel on Plaza de Santa Ana has been closely conected with bullfighting. This is the place where the crème de la crème met during the bugllfighting season. The heads of four of the most famous brave fighting bulls still adorn the walls of the bar. Across the way, Ernest Hemingway enjoyed drinking his beer in the Cervecería Alemana.

Lobby / Bar

The legendary Tower suite in the corner tower was the first choice of Spain’s best matadors. This is where Manolete and Luis Miguel Dominguín resided. With its rooftop deck, ME Madrid’s adjacent Sky Bar offers a beautiful panorama view of the city. Lavisly renovated, the hotel is one of the top Madrid addresses since its re-openign in 2006.

Raul and Leonor Morales (Sales Coordinator) invited us to a fantastic lunch at Midnight Rose the trendy restaurant of the hotel. The Chef is Jaime Renedo from Madrid's restaurant Asiana. This 25 years old Madrileño Chef is revolutioning the city gastronomical scene. Just to give you an idea they welcome us with some kind of tiny Oreo cookies made of black olives and Gruyère cheese!

Madrid should congratulate for this fantastic addition to its hotel scheme.

View Article  January 6th – The Three Kings Day (Día de Reyes)

The last day of the Christmas season in Spain is celebrated on January 6th, Epiphany (the Three Kings day)

The Three Kings Day (Día de Reyes) is a Christian celebration that commemorates the Biblical story of the three kings who followed the star of Bethlehem to bring gifts to the Christ child.

The tradition in Spain is that the children get their Christmas present on Epiphany morning. Christmas presents are brought by the Three Kings on January 6th to every Spanish home. On January 5th at night we all leave one pair of shoes in the sitting room by the Nativity scene (Nacimiento) together with some liquor for the Kings and some cookies for the camels on January 5th. When we wake up in the morning our presents are waiting for us by our shoes.

As in Spain we celebrate every occasion we can eating and because every fiesta is connected to a special local delicatessen made up for the special occasion we celebrate the Día de Reyes eating the Roscón de Reyes with some hot chocolate. Many grandparents organize for all their sons/daughters and grandchild to visit them on the Día de Reyes to eat the Roscón together and receive their presents.

View Article  Spain. Come in, no need to knock

In the late sixties the Ministry of Tourism of Spain launched a campaign to increase tourism to our country. Those years Spain was isolated from the outside world. I was lucky enough as to find one of those old posters on a wall at Venta el Quijote, a restaurant/tapas place in Puerto Lápice, La Mancha. It reads:

Spain.

Please come in, no need to knock

The Venta del Quijote is a very special restaurant located in the heart of La Mancha. This region of Spain is home of Don Quijote and also of Oscar winner film maker Pedro Almodovar.

In the old times there were not many places where to stop for a meal on your way from Madrid to Andalucia. My family as many other Spanish families have been stopping at Venta el Quijote at least since the begining of the automovile era. White walls with blue wood finish in a patio full of Cervantes flavour.

If driving from Madrid or Toledo to Andalucia this is a great place where to stop for either a full meal or a glass of wine and a tapa of Manchego Cheese. The Venta el Quijote is located at Puerto Lápice, a small town on the side of the main road.

I am finally back from Cannes and to my surprise I found everything ready for Christmas in the city

So I did what many other Madrileños did today. I went to Casa Mira, the most prestigious shop in Madrid, to buy turron and other Christmas specialities. Casa Mira is located at Carrera de San Jerónimo 30, Madrid. Tel. +3491 429 8895

This is how the outside of Casa Mira looks like

And this is the inside.... Crazy busy but worth the wait...

Then I decided on visiting the new Mercado Gastronomico Urbano de Madrid: La Plaza at Plaza Vazquez de Mella. This is a great event organized by my good friend Victor del Campo being the sponsor Madrid City Hall. This event takes place at the begining of December every year. I strongly suggest you to visit if you are visiting the city these dates:

Noelia Fermosell (on the picture below) gave me to taste some excellent wine her family produces in Cenicientos outside of Madrid. I promissed to visit her winery in January. They took over their grandparets winery and I want to organize for our travelers visit their premises and taste their great wines.

Then Pedro Martinez (below) sold me some ecological beans pre-cooked with olive oil and paprika that his family grows and prepares in Colmenar de Oreja outside Madrid. He promised to me to receive some of you if coming to Madrid and want to visit an ecological vegetable garden.

I ended up my tour to the Gastronomical market stopping tasting some great wine that the Robles family prepares in Cordoba with Pedro Ximenez grapes.

I enjoyed a great day in Madrid and wanted to share with you!

I want to introduce you to Mary. I met Mary, a DC born daughter of a US Diplomat last week. I was introduced to her by common friends. Mary fell in love with a handsome Basque and with Spain and our winesHer formal schooling in wine apreciation began in 1992 at the UCLA Vintage program. She completed all four levels of the British professional wine certification program from 1998 to 2001. She obtained the Wine Spirit and Education Trust (WSET) Diploma in 2001. Mary is now an experienced wine-taster and wine educator with over 13 years of professional study and job experience in the wine sector. When not leading her own tastings, Mary keeps current in the wine world by attending three or more wine tastings a week and reading numerous publications.

I was very impressed with Mary’s knowledge of the Spanish wine market scene and with her communicational abilities. I immediately invited her to take care of those Made for Spain’s clients interested in enjoying a wine tasting in Madrid. As of today Mary will begin taking care of those of you interested in Spanish Wine World.

Mary will give a fun, informative and interactive introduction to the amazing wines of Spain.  The wine tasting will consist of six wines from around our country: two white and four reds. The wines are high quality that provide a good introduction to the excellent value-quality relationship here in Spain.  Examples of "joven" through reserve level wines will be served.

The idea is to cover the whole Spanish wine scene through the wines presented.  Usually the more traditional areas, such as Rioja and Ribera will be included but also a sampling of the many rising stars, such as Priorat, Somontano, Bierzo, Jumilla, La Mancha, and the very trendy wine category of Vinos de la Tierra.  Any requests for particular types of wines or a different number of wines will be accommodated by Mary without any problem.

After the wine tasting we suggest you enjoy a tapas reception including five or six typical Spanish tapas. Thus you will enjoy a real Spanish experience with a fellow American and her Basque husband!
